In 1995 I went to Namibia to Zimbabwe's national team Freshwater Fisheries. My husband had been selected to represent his country in a tournament against Namibia and South Africa. Although the country had been independent for five years, had only been an entire country for a year when the southern port of Walvis Bay had been returned to the country by South Africa.
By the late 19th century Germany colonized Namibia, overlooking the country's name and unimaginative South West Africa. In the south, near the border with South Africa, is the strategic port of Walvis Bay, then under British control. At the end of the war in South Africa given the country legally until the end of World War II, when it unilaterally annexed the territory - without international recognition. In 1966 a vicious guerrilla war erupted, ending in 1988 when South Africa finally agreed to cede control of the country. The war did not stop the South Africans for the installation of the excellent infrastructure in Namibia, which has benefited greatly from the country remains very efficient at the time of writing.
The Namibian fishing equipment had offered to accommodate their Zimbabwean counterparts, so after leaving our bags in different houses boarded a minibus and a tour of Windhoek. The name is Afrikaans meaning "a windy corner," and certainly lives up to its name that day. The streets were clean and well maintained and clean, and the architecture was impressive. There were some extremely modern buildings, occupied by many companies in South Africa and banks. A stroll through the shops full of women in our party with joy - the shelves were full of fine South African products. It is encouraging to see that the two countries have maintained business ties, obviously, because many times we hear of African countries are left behind by the colonial rulers before or after the administrative independence.
The German influence has remained, and a number of buildings and churches reflect The period of German colonization. There are three castles around Windhoek, the most famous of which was called Alte Fest. This translates as "old fortress, and the castle located on the German occupation forces when they started to build Windhoek in 1890.
